Evidence that time is illusory

Our basic day to day functions are based on and scheduled according to time. Time represents the past, present and the future. The past has already happened, is fixed by time. The present is this very moment when you’re reading this and the future is a wonder and the approaching present. Everything is controlled and enunciated by time. The teacher scolds a student on being late and not on time. Every important task, be it a meeting in a president’s office, or a date with a pretty girl; it is really important to be on time. But the main question which lies here is, if it is a time which governs every occasion and every being, does it exist?

Many people claim time as the 4th dimension, and many claim that there is no such thing as time. People who believe that time does not exist say that time is not a continuous flow, instead whatever we experience is a series of snapshots which goes on the moment after moment after moment. From the big bang theory which happened 14 billion years ago, to the stars that formed the galaxy, to the creation of Earth 4.5 billion years ago, to the time when dinosaurs existed and to the time the present earth is today; all are placed on a slice of “Now” which happened at different moments. A series of these slices in the ascending order of the moments in which they took place is known as time, which is evidence that time is illusionary. When these “Now” slices are placed on top of the moments at the present, they will form the future.

Einstein said that time and space cannot survive alone and depend on each other. He called this concept “space-time” and claimed it to be the 4th dimension. He found out that there is a profound link between the motion through space and passage in time. When a person is in motion or is moving, it relatively effects that moment making it slower and thus placing his “Now” slice in an angled position. This will relate to time differences in several hundred or millions of years in different parts of the universe.

Julian Barbour, a physicist and a cosmologist, strongly claims that time is an illusion and does not exist. He says that people cannot hold onto time because it isn’t there at all. He claims that all the Nows have a special structure, and he thinks that to be a landscape or a country called Platonia.

Barbour believes that the Big Bang theory hasn’t taken place in the past. Instead, it is just a special place in Platonia. He states that we do not have any evidence of whatever happened in the past except for memory. But memory is created by neurons in our brains. We also do not have any evidence of the formation of Earth except for fossils and rocks. He believes that all Nows are linked to one another in the Platonia and appear to be lined up in sequence, but there is no evidence of the actual time of flow, and it is nowhere to be found.

There are many theories relating to time and space, and some tests have been performed to find out whether time exists or not. The majority of them believe the time to be an illusion and that it does not exist.

What is it that surrounds us and occupies vast areas of our universe? Matter and empty space or vacuum are the two main components that make up the physical world. We are made of matter

Everything you can see, touch is made of matter. You, me the monitor which you’re watching right now, the air you breathe are all particles which we call matter. We can find matter in 4 different states which include solid, liquid, gaseous and plasma. The matter is comprised of molecules and atoms. If we want to be more precise, we could also say that it is made of protons, electrons, neutrons and in the lower levels – subatomic particles such as quarks.

Atoms are mostly empty space

The term matter describes all the substances that compose physical objects. Vacuum or just space, on the other hand, is the void that surrounds matter but also engulfs it. How does it engulf it you may ask. Since atoms make up the matter and they contain 99.999 % of empty space matter is mostly empty space too.

Quarter in the middle of a football field

To explain how this works, imagine an atom the size of a football field. The nucleus of the atom would be a quarter sitting in the middle, whereas electrons would be apples circling frantically around it. That’s how small is the physical part of the atom. This theory drags a few questions with it too.

You’ve never really touched anything

One of them is: If matter is made of 99.999% of empty space then why don’t the objects fall through one another, and why they don’t merge? The answer is in electric fields. Every atom has its own electric field which repels the other one. This means when you sit on your chair, you actually hover on it on a distance of 1 nanometer and the atoms never touch.

Is vacuum completely empty?

Space, vacuum, void is the emptiness that surrounds us. Some of it, like the one that we can find in our atmosphere, is filled with matter too for example oxygen and nitrogen. The vacuum of space is also filled with matter, but less densely. These particles are mostly helium and nitrogen in the plasma state. Cosmic rays, dust, neutrinos also drift through the void.

Energy – closely linked to matter by the famous E=mc2 Einstein’s formula – is also one of essential ingredients that make our universe. He was trying to tell us that time is relative – time is a matter of perception, it is an idea that we have in our minds, a concept that is inherently human and, therefore, inherently flawed.

Time and space are two separate, yet married concepts that work together in synergy to create this illusion that we call reality. Nowadays, physicists argue that we live in the world of infinite universes – we live in the Matrix, if you will, we live in a world where each and every single one of our decisions determines which universe we are currently living in. Does this sound complicated? Of course it does, but it is actually very simple. In a nutshell; there are infinite universes, vibrating around us, therefore, naturally, there are infinite versions of us, living an infinite number of lives in this infinite number of universes. Does it still sound complicated? Let’s break it down even further.

The world we live in is, at least to an extent, an illusion – the things that we do and the space that we move in, objects that we interact with and individuals that we spend our precious time with, are merely an illusion. Everything is made out of atoms that shape and create our sense of reality and make everything seem definitive and imperative, without ever letting us question ourselves; “Is what I see really all that there is?”

The truth is, what we see is just a manifestation of what we want to see – we dictate our reality and we choose who we are. We are Gods and slaves both. We are The Universe and we are tiny grains of sand at the same time. We are everything and we are nothing. We are what and who we want to be and that is how relative and ever changing our Universe is. The world that you live in is only what you make it to be. It is your creation. Time and space are just concepts that we have invented, they are tools that we use to justify our lack of importance. They are vehicles of human imagination.

Einstein’s Theory of Relativity

The Measurement of Time

The passage of time is an abstract concept that we all take for granted. We all eat, sleep and go to work at roughly the same time each day. Few of us give little thought about it, but it is an integral part of all our lives. That’s why humans have, for thousands of years, continuously developed more and more sophisticated ways of measuring the passage of time. From sundials to computer time servers and atomic clocks, people have for generations strived to gauge the passage of time accurately.

For centuries, people have measured time concerning movement. The hands of a clock were moving around a clock-face to denote the passage of hours, minutes, and seconds. The orbit of the Earth around the Sun to describe a year. The orbit of the moon around the Earth to represent a month.

Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity suggests time is closely entwined with the concept of space. He suggested that both time and space began with the Big Bang and the creation of the Universe some 14 Billion years ago. At the instance just before the Big Bang, all matter was tightly packed into a tremendously dense, infinitely small, hot state. It’s hard for us to comprehend but the universe, stars, planets and all matter contained within them emerged in a split second from this infinitely small dot.

The study of the measurement of time is called Horology. Human history is littered with a large variety of devices developed to measure time. Sundials were among the earliest examples of ancient time measurement apparatus. A sundial uses the sun to cast a shadow on markings that indicate the hour of the day. The Internet is synchronized using NTP time servers which reference atomic clocks to ensure the synchronization of computers across the globe.

The precise measurement of time is critical to our modern lifestyles. So much so that International standards exist to coordinate the measurement of time across the continents of the world. This International standard is known as Coordinated Universal Time or UTC. World time is split into a series of longitudinal time zones. Time zones are one hour apart and their local time is referenced as an offset from UTC.

To conclude, time is an abstract concept that is inextricably linked to the idea of space and the creation of the Universe. For millennia, humans have strived to maintain precise time references. Today, modern technology allows us to keep highly accurate time references of astonishing accuracy. Atomic clock technology has resulted in the creation of many modern high-technology tools such as the GPS system and Internet time servers.
